PUPPET MAKING WORKSHOP: TOY THEATER and PUPPETS INSPIRED BY CLEMENTINE HUNTER
Have fun imagining the world inside of a painting and bringing it to life!
SAT. FEB. 27 10 am-noon
For Children
Ogden Museum of Southern Art, 925 Camp St., New Orleans, La.
Calliope Puppets Karen Konnerth directs a two-hour workshop for children, leading them to use puppetry to bring to life stories of their own, inspired by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art collection. For this workshop, the inspiration is Clementine Hunter’s paintings. Children will look a Hunter’s paintings and “animate” scenes from them. Focusing on one element of the painting, children will recreate the background with simple materials, then build quick-rod puppets of the painting’s people, as well as dream up dialogue for each one for a short performance. Children will leave with a toy theater stage and the puppets they create. This is part of a series of workshops directed by Calliope Puppets. Each workshop will feature a different puppetry technique, so they may by taken as a series, or individually. Through these workshops, children will learn about Southern artists and art traditions.
Fee: $20 (Museum members); $25 (non-members). Fees includes materials.
RESERVATIONS RECOMMENDED
UPCOMING PUPPET WORKSHOP includes: March 27: Robot Marionettes inspired by Clyde Connell and John T. Scott

COALITION OF CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS AND LEADERS
TO ANNOUNCE JOINT PLATFORM IN SUPPORT OF CULTURE, AND THE CREATIVE ECONOMY: 21 FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
What:
A group of cultural organizations, leaders, presenters, performers, artists, designers have come together on a joint platform for policies, programs and funding in support of the city’s culture and creative economy.
When:
12pm, Noon, Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Where:
Contemporary Arts Center
900 Camp Street
Why:
Several cultural groups had prepared and presented platforms regarding the current municipal election campaign. After attending each other’s meetings, it was determined that agreement on priorities was high, and that a clearer and more effective message for the candidates could be developed and communicated best in a joint platform. The consensus is expected to help candidates understand better the needs and aspirations of the city’s cultural producers. Protecting the city’s traditional culture, welcoming cultural innovation, and growing the ability of all to earn a living, grow their businesses, and remain in New Orleans is an underlying theme to many of the specific recommendations.
The joint platform and individual industry or discipline platforms will be available at www.artscouncilofneworleans.org and www.cano-la.org. Partners in preparing the joint platform will be announced on Wednesday. Mayoral and Council candidates have been invited to attend

MoreEvocative black-and-white environmental portraits of 100 people who encompass the widely ranging diversity of New Orleanians comprise the book Portraits: Photographs in New Orleans 1998-2009 by Jonathan Traviesa.
There will be a booksigning on Thurs. Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. The booksigning also corresponds to the exhibition at the Ogden Museum: Jonathan Traviesa: Portraits in New Orleans 1998-2009. The exhibition opens on Nov. 27, 2009 and will be on view until Jan. 24, 2010.
The subjects of Traviesas photographs are not random, but were carefully selected by the photographer, based on friendship and an intuitive understanding of his subjects and their environments. Some know each other, some do not.
I am interested in where and how people live in New Orleans, says Jonathan Traviesa. I believe that who these people are is shaped in part by the spaces they know and live around. This project attempts to record the dialogue between the intimate, built environment of New Orleans and the personalities contained therein.
The black-and-white images were taken with an old Rolleiflex twin-lens camera that was given to him by his father. The settings are outdoors, which keeps the lighting simple and gives the viewer a sense of how and where the subjects live. (Most reside in the Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods in New Orleans.) This exhibition offers a unique update on the Southern tradition of integrating the artsvisual, literature and theaterwith a sense of place.

MoreCurator’s Talk with Richard McCabe
Revival: Historical Processes in Contemporary Photography focuses on contemporary artist who are utilizing 19th century photographic methods. In a one-hour lecture curator Richard McCabe will discuss the threads of modern alchemy in an increasingly digital age. McCabe will talk about the artists and works he selected for the exhibition. Using images in the show as examples he will elaborate on the processes employed by the featured photographers: including cyanotypes, tintypes, wet-plate collodion, ambrotypes gum-bichromate and platinum prints. He will also discuss his own interest and involvement with historic photographic processes. Immediately following McCabe’s talk featured artist Bruce Schultz will demonstrate wet and dry plate photographic methods.
Bio
Richard McCabe was born in Mildenhall, England and grew up in the American South. McCabe received an MFA in Studio Art from Florida State University in 1998. In the last 12 years has lived and worked in New York City and New Orleans, Louisiana. Currently, McCabe works as the Chief Preparator at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and as an Associate Professor of Art at Xavier University. He continues to pursue his own art, working primarily in photography, painting, and installation.

MoreOne of the first public exhibits of the pastel portraits from the series on free people of color was presented at Café Rose Nicaud. Owned by Kenneth and Melba Ferdinand, this Faubourg Marigny business is named in honor of a slave woman who is said to have bought herself out of bondage with the earnings she made from the firs coffee stand ever set up on the riverfront in the early the early 19th century. It is an epic story of courage and transformation. Her portrait and others are documented in the art book titled NEW ORLEANS FREE PEOPLE OF COLOR & THEIR LEGACY, which was published by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans.
The exhibit allowed me to connect this body of work to the community outside of the established art houses, and this Saturday, I will read from the book as part of a signing at the Café. The reading includes a spoken word performance of poems from the series “Channeling the Spirits: The Creoles”. If you are in The New Orleans area, please join us for this signing and performance. It is free and open to the public.
Café Rose Nicaud: 632 Frenchmen Street
Saturday, December 5 from 6-8PM. A reception will follow.
ABOUT THE FREE PEOPLE OF COLOR & BOOK:
“Les gens de couleur libres” are considered the first multiracial people in the United States, borne of an illegal but tolerated mixing between the French, Spanish and African races of colonial Louisiana. This visual history project celebrates the legacy of New Orleans’ hybrid caste and their cultural and political contributions. For the past seven years, I have been developing these colorful and expressionistic pastel portraits on paper that identify a Creole intelligentsia of artists and activists who fought to abolish slavery and dismantle the institutional prejudices of their times.
Funded with support from the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New York, the publication’s release coincided with the Ogden Museum’s exhibition of the same name that recently closed. The art book chronicles these lesser-known heroic individuals who played a major role in the city’s cultural heritage. The book contains biographical notes on each individual portrayed and a time line of New Orleans colonial history, both written by Creole historian Keith Weldon Medley. Mr. Medley will join me to sign at the Café.
OTHER DECEMBER SIGNINGS:
Ogden Museum: 925 Camp Street, December 4 from 6-9PM. The book and art prints on FREE PEOPLE are available at an Ogden event for Members only, and it includes numerous artists signing their books and selling prints throughout the three museum floors.
Faubourg Marigny Art & Books: 600 Frenchmen Street, Sunday, December 20 from 4-6PM

“We want artists, designers, scientists, financial mangers, real estate developers, educators, business owners, planners and any citizen who cares about our city to come and throw out new ideas,” said Tannen. MoreDraw-a-thon is a twenty-four hour, action-packed community art event. In activities led by local artists, both beginners and professionals of all ages explore a variety of techniques and materials. Draw-a-thon attracts participants from diverse communities across the region, learning and creating side by side.
Along with structured, scheduled events, Draw-a-thon creates an environment in which spontaneous collaboration and expression is encouraged, with materials and space provided for free-drawing. For example, the Drawing Room is completely covered in paper, a space where where families can draw together. Participants can attend for any length of time, from an hour to twenty-four hours.
Draw-a-thon generates constant artistic activity, promoting the possibilities of process and demonstrating that anyone can participate. By emphasizing process over product, Draw-a-thon encourages participants to continue with artistic endeavors on their own.
The event also includes periodic live music, food vendors, the amazing Draw-o-tron 3000, art performances, art games, stunts and shenanigans. Held annually in November at The Green Project, located in the St. Claude Arts District, Draw-a-thon also raises awareness for Recycle for the Arts.
Free and open to the public. All materials are provided.

MoreThe Big Idea is back on! Studio 527 and the Creative Alliance of New Orleans invite you to join a group of creative thinkers who are kicking off a series of brainstorming sessions to come up with new ideas for New Orleans and its greater region.
The Creative Alliance will also ask participants to contribute suggestions for cultural projects that can help expand and grow the cultural economy, listed as one of four new emerging industries by GNO Inc, Horizon Inc, and the Master Plan.
Other emerging industries that will be addressed include the bio- medical, alternative energy, green building industries, and issues of coastal restoration. Coastal restoration and hurricane protection have been Big Ideas since Katrina in New Orleans and the surrounding Gulf of Mexico region. The problems of urban development, flood and storm protection, agriculture, forests, prairies and wetlands, industry, energy, economic development, and the huge resources of the rivers and the Gulf of Mexico will be examined as relating to other Big Ideas during Saturday’s meeting.
“Big thinkers”, or those willing to think big, from all disciplines are invited to participate. The meeting will be informal, quick paced, and will be recorded for distribution to participants as the basis for follow up initiatives and future “What’s the Big Idea” brainstorming sessions.
Organizers of the sessions hope candidates for public office will consider these ideas; but these sessions will not be political forums.
“We hope people will come with their dreams, inventions, off the wall ideas, and the kind of thoughts that are game-changers,” said Robert Tannen, Director of Studio 527.
“We want artists, engineers, designers, architects, scientists, financial managers, real estate developers, educators, business owners, planners and any citizen who cares about our city and region to come and propose new ideas,” said Tannen. Artists who have shown their work in the gallery are expected to attend, as well as coastal engineers, economists and generally creative members of the community.
A light brunch will be served, and guests are encouraged to bring refreshments to add to what the organizers hope will be a spirited, fun, and productive event. For more information, call 504.218.4807.

MoreThe New Orleans Botanical Garden has partnered with the KK Projects Life is Art Foundation to present a series of large-scale art works for public viewing inside the Garden. The sculptures first gained attention while they were on view during last weekend’s VOODOO Experience in City Park, and have now been brought into the Botanical Garden where they will stay through January.
Some of the larger-than-life pieces include the Cone by German artists Hans Sachs and Manuel Kretzer, a light based sculpture that rotates with human force. Watch your Eyes, by Elliott Coon, and Light Harps, by Jen Lewin will also be on display. Additionally there is a piece commissioned by City Park from Eric Ehlenberger called Venusian Swamp Lily that will hover above the Botanical Garden’s renowned Lily Pond. All of the sculptures are lighted, and some are kinetic, and interactive. All of the sculpture will be on display and open to the public for Celebration in the Oaks which runs from Friday November 27th to Wednesday December 30th.
The sculptures will be on exhibit for a special preview event at the New Orleans Botanical Garden on Thursday, November 12, from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. The Garden encourages members of the artistic, gardening, and cultural community to view the sculptures and take part in the ongoing vitalization of New Orleans as an arts and gardens destination.

Renowned experimental filmmaker Roger Beebe, whose films have shown around the globe from Sundance to the Museum of Modern Art and from McMurdo Station in Antarctica to the CBS Jumbotron in Times Square, comes to New Orleans to present a program of his recent mutli-projector films as part of a 6-week US tour. In his films, Beebe explores the possibilities of using multiple projectorsrunning as many as 8 projectors simultaneouslynot for a free-form VJ-type experience, but for the creation of discrete works of expanded cinema. The show builds from the relatively straightforward two-projector films The Strip Mall Trilogy and TB TX DANCE to the more elaborate three-projector meditation on Las Vegas, Money Changes Everything, and on finally to the eight-projector meditation on the mysteries of space Last Light of a Dying Star. These films are simultaneously performance films (as they can only be screened with Beebe actually running the projectorsand running from projector to projector), technological demonstrations (with a parade of different modes of image making and presentation16mm and super 8mm film alongside video and digital formats), and significant aesthetic works in their own right.
“[Beebes films] implicitly and explicitly evoke the work of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Lee Friedlander, all photographers of the atomic age whose Western photographs captured the banalities, cruelties and beauties of imperial America.” —David Fellerath, The Independent Weekly
“Beebe’s work is goofy, startling, and important.” —Daniel Kraus, Wilmington Encore

With its timeless themes, heartfelt performances, memorable music and brilliant artistry, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is generally acknowledged to be the most popular and widely seen motion picture ever produced by Hollywood. The timeless story of a young princess who, with the aid of her forest friends and adoring diamond minders, overcomes various worldly challenges to finally meet her prince. Rich in detail and imagination, this film stands apart from all other animated features because it was Hollywood’s first attempt at the genre and proved to numerous skeptics of the day that feature-length animation was a viable and exciting form of filmmaking.

Screening of Inside Look at Citizen’s Role in Post-Katrina Rebuilding
Luisa Dantas may know more about how the citizens of New Orleans took up the reins of recovery after Katrina that almost anyone else. She certainly turned up at every citizens’ event in those harrowing months after the storm. She then pursued the participants to learn more about their efforts, struggles, and dreams.
She is working on what should be a monumental documentary about the rebuilding of this city. As she approaches the completion of the work in its entirety, she has prepared selected short pieces that highlight some of the core issues that emerged during that time. Her style is hard hitting, but eerily beautiful as well.
Her piece, FLUX will be screened on Saturday, August 29th, memorializing the end of one way of life, and the beginning of another in this coastal outpost of the earth’s global warming.
“FLUX consists of short videos that reflect upon the precariousness of affordable housing in New Orleans and America four years after Katrina.”
-Luisa Dantas

MoreOn Tuesday, August 25th at 7:00 PM Louisiana ArtWorks presents “The Trajectory of Digital to Video”. Digital production and distribution processes have dramatically changed how artists work in film and video. New, ever-expanding toolsets present different conceptual and aesthetic choices to artists. Artist Courtney Egan moderates the discussion with panelists Madeleine Molyneaux (Producer, Picture Palace Pictures; Programmer, Festival du Nouveau Cinema, Montreal) and artists Michael Greathouse and Dawn Dedeaux.
Event is free and open to the public. Louisiana ArtWorks is located at 725 Howard Avenue at Carondelet.

MoreJoin us for an informal tour of An Instant Arrested in Eternity: Sketches by Steinlen, Forain & Tchelitchew with George Roland, Doris Zemurray Stone Curator of Prints and Drawings. Th鯰hile-Alexandre Steinlen roamed his beloved Montmartre filling his sketchbooks with the images he would draw upon to create vivid lithographs for weekly publications. Jean-Louis Forain haunted the courts, pen in hand, to capture his popular caricatures. Pavel Tchelitchew recorded the incidents from his personal life, planning more comprehensive compositions. These rapid and fluent images bring us closer to the spirit of the artist than many more highly developed works and give us the pleasure of seeing the artist at work. The exhibition features approximately 40 sheets selected from the recent gift of 135 drawings by the late Joseph F. McCrindle.

MoreIn the current two-person exhibition Mnemonic Devices: Rachel Jones and David Webber, two Louisiana-based artists working in painting (Jones) and video (Webber) explore the process of selecting and assembling information from memories and pre- existing documents into new visual amalgams. Though they work in different mediums, the artists share an interest in dissolving imagery and narratives into expressive fragments. The New Orleans-based Jones has exhibited her work locally at The Front, as well as in New York and Austria. Webber is Assistant Professor of Media Art at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and has exhibited his work in numerous international film festivals.
